well one of the guys at our airport has a twin engine airplane (cessna 310).. his uncle and another passnger were riding along when they felt a shudder in the plane... the previoius week the right prop had been replaced so all 3 immediately looked to the right.... the guy in the back seat says "hey there is some oil on the left wing"... the pilot instantly shuts down the engine over top of Greenvilel Airport (GVT) and the circle and land without a hitch....
well a few weeks ago i went over and took the engine off the plane and we brought it back one night to the airport... he tore the engine down yesterday and i thought it was just kind of amazing that the engine that threw a rod, was STILL RUNNING FINE when they shut it down....
heres a few pics i snapped today with my phone cause i thought it would be cool...
Here is a picture of the top of the case where the rod shot out from
heres a picture of the area it went and beat a hole in while still spinning
better look of teh same hole... notice the daylight
whats left of the cam and lifter area
the area adjacent to where the rod let go... notice that 1/2 inch bolt bent to a 90* angle
the number 6 rod/piston/cylinder
the number 5 piston/rod/cylinder... snaped a rod bolt and went to **** from there...
whats left of the case and engine... it was cracked and just came off with the other cylinders
so when your out racing or driving or doing whatever, and you throw a rod.... just be glad your not at 8.000 ft![]()
