Not sure. I just plumbed the gate back into the exhaust pipe cuz I didn't like the way it sounded with the gate vented to atmo.

It does kinda look like that due to the camera orientation. Can't really tell from the pics, but it actually merges at a much lower angle. I know better than to do stuff like this

youll make more power with a WG vented to atmosphere but that isnt always the case for ppl. merging it around a 45* angle works the best

Is that because the pressures of the turbine and WG discharges don't have to fight each other? If so, it makes sense.

I was going to put a turbo at the end of my exhaust just for the wastegate to atm.....wasn't even going to run the feed to the motor

That's what all the books say and in theory, it is best, and probably does work better in an ideal world, but in the actual world, I haven't seen it affect a turbo kit at all.
I built the first few kits with an angled downpipe for the wg, then decided on a 90deg entry, same results on both kits and same back pressure on both kits.
Check out the single log kits that are around, no way is that wg in the ideal spot lol, being so far down and on only one side of the engine, on the crossover tube, but it does work and controls boost rather well.

I'm sure at an extreme power level it does make a difference.

look at this way, anything can work but what works more effeicent? if your going thru hassle of building something why not do it properly instead of having any later second guessing? ive seen it where it has created issues with back pressure where loss of power


with the position of WG on the crossover style setups. it may seem as its only truely venting that one side of motor however in a boosted application all tubing prior to turbo is at pressure. so youll have some pressure from the one bank backing up and exiting as well as the driver's bank [well say]. ideal? no but its hard to get WG ideal position every time. But merger can be hard to overcome as well but if you have the opportunity then might as well do it correctly.

or all else vent it to atmosphere, my last setup i ran a muffler specificially for the wastegate, this helped get rid of the awful noise and made it more of a jet setup
