    you would be correct....it does irritate me that people who think owning a dog is all about just buying one and throwing it in a back yard and all of a sudden it makes them "real" dog owners.

    Both real dogs, both incredibly well trained and very smart. I have a beagle that won't take off unless someone is with him is carrying a gun. (Yep he still hunts and does a damn good job) and he always comes back, not once have we had to go looking. The retriever will go get the paper as soon as he sees it, doesn't need to be asked. It takes time and patience

    That is odd about your Beagle, cause they will usually just run and won't come back. But yes, dog training take a lot of time and patience.

    I honestly think the beagle learned more from the retriever as far as just hanging around the house goes, I mean instincts still kick once in a while and he's gone for maybe 3 hours, no big deal.
