I'd start with the sending unit. Find someone with a scanner and verify the reading going to the PCM so you can determine for sure if its not just a bad gauge cluster.

So pulsing like that is not normal, i neve rnoticed it before, thats what threw a red flag up, then the pinging noise got me worried too.
