What all needs to be done to switch from a drive by wire to a drive by cable throttle body?

Not much really. Pick up a conventional throttle body on Ebay or elsewhere, get a throttle cable bracket from the Dealer or fabricate one your self. Find a throttle cable that will work. (I've heard some guys use Caprice/Impala cables) I got a Lokar cable off Ebay that works good. And then depending on what you are putting the engine in, you'll need a throttle pedal that will accept a cable. What I am not sure of is if you need to have the PCM reprogrammed also. I started mine up the first time with the original program (drive by wire) and a cable operated throttle body and it idled well enough but I later sent my PCM out for other things and I don't know if my tuner made changes to accomodate the change in throttle bodys....

If I had all the matching parts I would have stuck with the drive by wire (makes cruise control real easy) but I had a 2003 throttle body and 2002 pedal and TAC unit and the two years don't play well together.... Do you have any parts you'd like to get rid of? I know somebody who could use a 2001/2002 drive by wire throttle body or a 2003 pedal and TAC.....

dont think the conversion will require any PCM work. its a manual system without the DBW.

I in the planning stages right now, but I have the engine and transmission setting in the yard. Its a 2002 Tahoe 5.3 that I'm putting in a 1958 Chevy Truck.

What year drive by cable throttle body should I look for?

Thanks for the info I know I will have many more questions when I start the installation.

ill try to look up the info on this conversion, but it may take a while. im not sure if its PCM controlled, but seems like it wouldnt matter since it would be manually controlled after that.

If you are getting a tuned PCM, get your tuner to install the program for a cable driven tune. removing the DBW from the PCM requires no changes to the wiring harness that I know of. It's as simple as replacing the electronic throttle body with a cable driven unit. The truck cable is plenty long for almost any application.

I can verify that no harness changes are required to convert from drive by wire. Your swap is identical to mine. You can pick up a new 2002 cable operated throttle body on ebay for around $75. Used for even less.

Thanks for the info man. kwkenuf I will be having many questions for you because our swaps are the same. How do you like the engine in your truck? I have a 97 454 in my 55 Sedan and I love it. Thats what made me want to go with a modern engine in the truck also. That and I got the engine, trans, and wiring and everything for 1100 bucks from a friend of mine. This thing only had 25000 miles on it.

You guys are great I will start searching for a throttle body now. I just wanted a heads up of what to expect.

How do I like my engine swap? Fanfriggin'tastic! Night and day performance difference from the Gen I 350 that I pulled out... Immediate starts, great low end torque and the addition of overdrive has really changed the personality of my truck for the better. You will not be disappointed! Oh, and you got a good deal on your drivetrain.... Lots of money left over for mods!

damn, thats a great deal on that engine and tranny. i payed 1700 for my 6.0(engine, pcm, harness) now im looking for a tranny to go behind it. i think if i found all that for 1100 i might have passed on the 6.0, maybe.
