Not sure if this is the right forum or not for this question, so if it’s not, go ahead and move it.

I’ve got a 2001 2500HD 4x4 ECSB with the 6.0L and I live in California (yeah…lucky me ). Looking to do some exhaust mod’s to get me some better low end grunt for towing my rockcrawler and help out with my MPG. I’ve already got the K&N intake installed and I’m going to throw some NGK plugs on and some new wires (speaking of wires…what would you guys recommend?) and once the exhaust is installed I’m going to go get the ECM reprogrammed and lose the torque management and some other goodies to free up some more power.

My question is this: The pace setter long tubes that I’d like to throw on aren’t smog legal out here, and for that fact no long tubes are smog legal out here. With that in mind what shorty/mid length smog legal headers would you recommend? Or does anyone know of any smog legal long tube headers? Any California guys out there that have run into this issue? What did you guys do?

Thanks!!

Are you telling me that the Dynatech headers aren't 50 state legal?

Dynatechs are NOT smog legal in CA!! They do not have C.A.R.B. approval, trust me, if they did i'd have them already!

Do some other mod and worry about the headers later!

I was looking at the Edelbrock shorties. They're cheap and people have been giving good reviews.

What's the chance of finding a fellow ColoradoK5 member here?
Of course I understand the Jeep thing, you bought all my old parts.

I heard the are o.k., but they do not give you the torque on the bttm. end like the long headers do.

This is just my opinion.

Any header install I do I’d like to increase the low end torque (anything under 2000rpm’s for a 6.0L….seems like that thing doesn’t really start to pull until it gets up around 3000rpm’s), so if it’s not going to help with that then I’m not too interested in doing it. Hey Trever1t I see you have JBA headers on your rig…how do you like them? Those are the same ones I’m considering. Have they helped out any with power or MPG? You recommend not going with headers and do a different mod…what would you recommend? What’s the general consensus on which shorty/mid length header is better: JBA’s, Gibson’s, OBX, or ????

Thanks for the props on the sig picture. That’s my offroad money pit!!!!! 1977 K5 with full one ton running gear (D60 up front and 14bff with disc brakes in the rear), 4.56’s, eaton e-locker up front & Detroit in the rear, chromoly inner and outer front axleshafts (35 spline outers with warn drive flanges) with Longfield 300M billet ujoints, sbc 350 running on propane, TH350 with HD clutches/steels/bands/ etc, ORD doubler transfercase (mates the gear box of a np203 with a full np205 for a 4:1 low range), 1350 CV (1 ton) driveshafts front and rear, cross over hi steer with hydraulic assist, 4” of lift with 40” Interco Irok’s on custom beadlock wheels, custom front and rear bumpers and so many more mods I can’t even remember. Including torque multiplication from the torque converter…she’s pushing right around 100:1 crawl ratio. I pretty much point the rig where ever I want to go and she takes me there….it’s definitely a runner!!!! That picture was taken in the tank trap at Hollister Hills (where the magazine “Four Wheeler” holds “Top Truck Challenge”) last month.

Oh and yes...I'm a CK5 member...although I don't frequent that site too much anymore. Mostly just my local club's website.

JBA's, Gibson's, OBX...I thought those were all shorties. Doug Thorley makes a true midlength. I love em.

EDIT : I have no idea if they are CA/smog approved.
