This sure feels like a dumb question but I"m new here and I just don't know what LS1 stands for. What does LS1 indicate?

And.... as long as I'm asking dumb questons.. there's an abbreviation that I've seen here and on other sites that I don't understand. What is "props" short for? Example: "Props to Nelson for tune!". Props being an abbreviation for what?

Thanks for bringing this ole fart into the 2000's

LS1 5.7L is the all aluminum engine that GM put in the 98-2002 Camaro, Firebird(F-bodies), 97-2004 Corvette(Y-body), and up to 2004 GTO. It is considered a Generation 3 engine. The 4.8, 5.3 and 6.0 litre engines in GM trucks are all based off of the LS1 engine but have cast iron blocks except for the 5.3L in some SSR trucks which have an aluminum blocks. Some of the truck Gen3 engines have cast iron heads instead of aluminum. Parts are interchangable between all of these engines. The current DOD(displacement on demand) engines are Generation 4 engines based off of the LS1. The LS2 is the latest version of the LS1 and displaces 6.0L. GM has release a new LS7 which is a 7.0L version of the LS2 easily outputting 500hp.

Thanks very much! As long as I'm picking your brain can you tell me a bit about "Vortec"? I'm assuming that Vortec has to do with the head design?

I've just taken off the intake/fi in order to install the Radix and I was surprised to see the shape of the ports. I have to think that Vortec might have something to do with that port shape.

I can see by the color of the ports that the f/i squirts into the top edge of the V shaped port. Does the odd shape then cause some sort of swirling that enables better flow?.... or what? I very much appreciate your taking the time to educate me. I was away from rodding for a LONG time and have a lot to learn.

    Thanks, Jim

The vortec is what GM named the truck engine in 1996 when they switced from throttle body injection to multi port injection. When GM started putting the LS1 based engine in the trucks in 1999 the name just stuck around, so vortec basicly means nothing on the new trucks. The tall odd shaped intake port came out in 1997 on the LS1 in the corvette and the shape is all about getting high volosity and volume at the same time.

The "cathedral" dome at the top of the port is to allow the fuel injector to sit further into the intake runner so that the injector can spray fuel directly into the cylinder when the valve opens.
