    Is it worth buying?

So ive been looking for 5.3L for my 93 1500 and i found one really cheap at a local yard but the 03 that its out of caught on fire so i went to go look at it, the intake and all sensors are melted. The truck has 78k on it, so my question is can i just throw a new intake on it and be good or could the fire have damaged internals?

    Thanks for any info
    Ken

You run the possibility of the plastic running down the cylinders. Not to mention the fact that the block was probably heated red hot in the process. Who knows what happened to it. You're probably better off waiting on a better one.

I would recommend finding another one if you don't plan on rebuilding. However, if you plan on rebuilding, it would be a perfect block. Just call it a very seasoned block. A deck job and an align hone would make it good as new.

Nothing that a machine shop can't fix. Just take that into consideration before you decide.

Depends on if the fire dept put water in it or not. If there is water in the cylinders i would pass. Another member bought a burn out block and it had to be totally rebuilt due to rust.

Those kind of buys are always a scary thing. IMO I would wait on something else, you never know what could of happened

If you already plan on a total rebuild then NAB that $150 engine. But if you want to get just a runner that can be dropped in then check here: http://www.car-parts.com for a runner. They can be had for $400 or less. You may have to drive a few hours to pick it up depending on your location but it will save you some headaches of getting parts together and the cost ....and believe me you will have way more than $400 in a total rebuild! Machine shop work and gaskets alone will exceed the $400 cost for a runner.
