Very good information, working in the power industry, I hear about accidents like this ALL the time (most of which don't work out as well as this story). I inspect Heat Recovery Steam Generators for a living which requires a lot of crawling in spaces that are permit required confined spaces. The first thing I ALWAYS do before I start my inspections it to make sure the Ammonia systems for emissions reduction are tagged out as well as the Nitrogen blanket systems that are used during unit layup. You never know if someone forgot to lock something out, and before you know it, you're passed out inside a boiler with help several minutes away. Lesson to be learned... watch out in your day to day work, or when you're at home welding, etc... you just never know.

And there's guys that use brake cleaner for everything. I knew the stuff was fairly dangerous as far as shop chemicals go but that's brutal. I'll stick to my simple green for prepping aluminum for sure now.

Good information, we use paint thinner for alot of cleaning. But always make sure its totally dry before welding.
Just welding for long periods of time can effect you. Hoods down, breathing you can get light headed just from carbon dioxide from your self.
    Really good read.
    thanks for posting

I almost coughed a lung out after welding in my garage. I had prepped some aluminum with brake cleaner, and ate supper. I went back later to do the welding, and the vapors in the air burnt in the arc. The garage was closed the whole time because it was winter, but the doors don't seal well. Still, the brake cleaner hung in the air and taught me a lesson. I swear I thought I was going to cough myself to death.

A guy that works for me and built me truck loves brake clean. He doesn't anymore. I am sure that it has made him sick on more than one occasion.
