    Chebbie Brakes...

    Throw some ideas out...

Passenger-side rear brake drum mysteriously developed an issue while truck sat up during recent motor swap. Seems like it's stuck in "apply", thus locking only the passenger-side rear wheel. The other three wheels/brakes are fine. What's wierd is the fact that it only does it in DRIVE. Seems "free" in reverse. This is a non-ABS application. For those that don't know, the rear brakes are drum brakes (unlike newer SUVs).

My suspicion is that drum's cylinder is bad (each drum has a hyraulic cylinder). I'll try to take a pic this evening. I replaced the driver-side cylinder years ago b/c it leaked severly. I'm thinking the passenger-side may require changing as well.

When brake cylinders go bad, they just leak, they don't stick.

E-brake cable stuck? Springs broke/Missing? Shoe not in place?

I always replace brake parts in pairs, do both sides so they're balanced in strength. A lot of times you get rust set up in the drums if the parking brake was applied all the time it sat undriven.

The last truck I worked on had a bad front caliper. At first I thought it was a rear hanging but after driving it a short while the caliper would be fire hot from dragging a brake.

Why not just convert them to disc?

what fools me is that is spins in reverse.........

have you had the drum off since it started doing this? sounds like a spring broke and one of the shoes fell.

something has to be bound for it to only spin one way

Had one leak before... changed it about 12 years ago. Yeah... THAT LONG! LOL No brake issues since (except normal maintenance).

Usually would replace in pairs, but I was in college 12 years ago when that happened. Couldn't do much on campus then. Kinda snuck in a "hide-a-way" locationn jus to get that "one" cylinder changed.

Married with kids, and trying to sell one house to spend more money on a bigger house with a slightly higher mortgage. Nice idea, but bad timing.

Everything seems solid and in-place. Nothing was out of the ordinary. Readjusted the "sprocket" of sorts, but issue reappeared shortly after driving.

Yes, sir... has to be. Haven't had time after work this week to inspect thoroughly. Plus mid-20 to low-30 degree weather also has a factor in me choosing a warm recliner & a cold Budweiser.

Keep the ideas coming. Trying to get different perspectives before I start troubleshooting.

Yup. Just replace them. Age and mileage are telling you so...as well as the notion of replacing brakes in pairs. You will spend less time (and maybe $$$) doing this right away versus trying to trouble shoot and then nickel and dime yourself to death trying to get it fixed after this and that end up NOT working.

if your going to be driving it alot this summer just spend the cash and buy everything new for the back system, i had an 86 and let me tell you instead of running back ond forth to the parts store after i took things apart, i just started buying everything associated with a job.

go buy pads, hardware or spring kits, and new drums are cheap enough too for good insurance. that way old comes off and new goes on. dont forget about those brake lines too!
