Zeake...I had (have) the exact same problem. My drivers side rear header bolt head is MIA. One of the guys that does some of my work for me was able to tighten the one next to it enough so that I don't have any leaks or anything.

Then again, I'm not running FI or anything that extreme, so I'm not sure if that would make a difference in your case.

Thanks for the thought. If health insurance didn't cost me 600 a month for a family of 3 and 2600 dollar deductibles each and taxes kill me for a used vette every year I would be further along. But you know taxes and death are the only certanties.
Pull the head and fix it?
Pull the engine and fix it?
Cam it at either?
What cam for my little bitty 5.3?

Yeah and I am real tempted to try it. I might just do that. The flange on pacesetters is very thick. I just hate that I have spent 2 days on it and am about to spend another not to mention. My mechanic buddy has been there the whole time for free.

My time is worth a lot considering I have very little to spare for me or my family.
. . . . . . .. . . . . . . . . .. . ......... . . ..
I have also spent the last 4 hours discussing it mith my wife who is afraid I will go behind her back and burn plastic. I won't. But I do have some options on funding that will not have to be paid back. IOW sell some stuff. I am just not sure of how much and can sell. nothing of interest to the forum. It is more like investments.

Get a left handed tap and tap it out. You drill it for the correct tap size and then just start threading it in. Drill for the tap size about 3/4" deep and then tap it. The tap will remove the bolt once it bottoms out. Yeah, too bad you didn't try the welding trick first. Be sure the tap size is about 1/4-28 or so.

I noticed the bolt was broke/gone when we installed the transmission in January. It never leaked. Me and my mechanic thought that the bolt was just gone. Well it was not. I will try to tap it and if that doesn't work I will try to leave the headers on and see how long it takes to leak. If It holds for about 6 months I can come up with the dough to do something at least 1/2 way decent.
Like this maybe.

Thanks for all the advice. I will try to post a picture of the broken bolt if I can get my camera to take the pic.
