Thread: How to 4L60E to 4L80E trans swap

It lasted with about 1.5 years of 425hp to the wheels with the rearmount, and the rest of it's life with 520hp to the wheels with a front mount.

The trans started making noise last week, a high whining noise under light acceleration, well any acceleration and idle.

This week we tore it apart and found out what has failed.
The clutches are slightly burned up. They are black and lots of residue in the pan. Some of the steals between the clutches were warped too.
I can't say the gears were slipping, but there is definitely a lot of wear.

The big problem was the sprag. It's worn out and grinding itself away.

I thought this would be the last part that would go.

Anyway, I bought a salvage yard trans and I'll be installing it Sunday, then later this week I'll add a shiftkit. I've seen stock 80e's with shiftkits last a long time, so in the meantime I'll rebuild this broken one and move on.
Was this the built transmission that's listed in the 4l60e to 4l80e swap tutorial?

is something like this possible with a 1988 silverado, 4 bolt main 350, i really really hate this 700r4, and would like a stronger more reliable tranny in my truck. please pm me any info you may have! thanks!
    4 bolt main TBI 350
    built 700R4
    casting#916 heads
    advanced timing to 12.5 degrees
and that wraps it up for now!

soon to come, high rise intake with nitrous plate, bigger cam, turbo 350 or 400 tranny with a floor shift, wet shot of nitrous(somewhere between 125 and 225) 10 or 12 bolt 373 with a locker, 20 inch chip foose torque thrust wheels, new paint probably metallic jet black, corbeau buck seats

is your 700r4 mechanical or electronically controlled?

in order to shift a trans you can run the pcm for the trans only, but it'll need a few inputs, vss, tps, etc.
or companies have controllers for the 80e.

its mechanical, all off the kick down cable that connects to the throttle body

It will work but you will need to go to a full manual valve body, manual shifting, which isn't too bad especially if you put a floor mount shifter in the truck.

TCI makes a controller but its not cheap. The diesels had a standalone 80e controller but you have to wire it up and I know its been done before. I'm not sure how you'd program it, though.

The Compushift is nice, but over $1000, that's right 3 zeros.
Since he is running a TBI 350 couldn't he use a harness and ECM from a 93 3500 with the TBI 350 and 4L80e? Just a thought.
As far as the diesel ECM, it would be from a 91-93 6.2 and 6.5 truck. Not sure about all the wiring involved. Apparently these ECMs can be kind of pricey too, since a lot of people realize what they can be used for.

kinda speaking spanish to me as far as trannies go, but i gotta do something with this 700r4, and i really need the overdrive for work and hauling the race truck to the track and back, its a torque monster IMO, in other words, its a gu2 rear end(2.73, yeah, 2.73) and its walking 03-07 hemi pickups haha and
