Dobermans are some good looking dogs.
My mom's papillion has a spinal deterioration too. It started when he was about 14 as well. My mom being the dog lover that she is bought him a "wheelchair" that is one-off custom made to fit him perfectly. He had lost complete use of his rear legs too. After a few months in the chair he started to regain use of his legs. Now at almost 17 he gets around great without the chair. His legs are not perfect but it is a miracle.
You guys aren't telling me anything I don't already know about training, I have trained all of my dogs and done very well at it. Stoney(border collie) was the easiest ever. My others took a few weeks, month or so. I've never done extensive training with my dogs because all I care about is that they let me know when they need out and do what they are told when they are told. What it all boils down to with Lucy(dachshund mix) is we are not the right owners for her and she is not the right dog for us. She needs to be with a retiree that can be home with her at all times and hold her in their lap. If Stoney wasn't getting stressed and acting out more, and she didn't have a habit of rolling her feces when she's pissed then I would love to keep her. She can be outside for an hour and then come inside for 30 minutes or so, be put in her box while we go to eat for maybe 2 hours and we come home to a dog covered in their own turds. So then we have to clean her and her crate(while holding back the heaves) when we should be able to take the dogs for a walk or something. It's not medical because if it were then I could see it happening during the 5 hour streches that she is in the crate. She does the poo and roll when she has to be physically put into the crate. She is crated at night now too since the last bed wetting incident where she went and pooped in the living room(not a problem) then came and peed in my bed(big problem). She can stay in the crate for a solid 8 hours with no accidents.
