Get a test light or multimeter and check the grounds from the PCM to the block. Check Red 1 and 40 Blue 1 and 40. They should be dead shorts to ground. Also, check continuity on Blue 74 to the yellow wire on the coolant sensor. Did you replace the coolant sensor?

how bout if i unplug the coolant sensor and see what that does...if it is unplugged and the gauge still jumps around that would indicate a short right?...and i will check the grounds on the pcm when i get off...now that i know which pins they are..thanks man

while you have the connections off the PCM verify that the metal pins for the wires are all sticking through the same amount on the PCM connector on the harness.

Not necessarily, it could be a short in a wire instead of in the sensor.

well...i swapped harnesses today and the temp sensor still jumps around as you move the column shifter....changed the coolant temp sensor in the head...still same...i have an extra neutral safety switch i guess i will change it tomorrow, since the prob seems to be related to the shifter....truck runs good now after the harness swap ...if i ever get the temp prob fixed i will be a happy man!!

Great! Now just find the short. May be inside the steering column.
