You should drop the pan for that for sure.

It means try it, if it works then you saved a bunch of time. If it doesn't, you'll know to pull the pan.

First you say I need to drop the pan for sure. Then you say you don't know. Which is it?

Or, better yet, what does the GM service procedure specify for timing chain replacement?
