Well, Billy and Dustin are getting my converter put in. I just talked to Billy and he said the tranny fluid was black (not to mention it was low - and no, I haven't checked it in a while, my bad). He said the dark fluid usually means there's clutch material in the fluid, which may mean I'll be looking at some slippage problems in the near future.

That being said, I need some input. I don't plan on babying this thing, especially since I'm getting the converter put in. So if I start to have issues with slipping, I need some recommendations. Is it best to rebuild? Or is it more cost effective to put in a better built tranny? And by cost effective, I mean is it going to be cheaper in the long run to put a built tranny in now, rather than replace it with another 4L60E and have problems again down the road. And if the recommendation is to replace it, which one? 4L80E? Other?

Well for all the parts I had to refresh in mine, which was basically the entire tranny, I just used the tougher 65e parts. I had the dealership rebuild it to specs of the 65e tranny. I brought all the parts in myself and saved a bunch. 80e will eat a ton of hp, so I would stick with the 60 or 65e rebuilt.

    Thanks Chris.

What are we talking price-wise for what you did, including install?

Sounds like it needs at least refreshed. Most places will rebuild back to stock for $700 carry-out, you do the R&R. If you want performance, run it into the ground and when it craps the bed, buy an FLP stage 4 or 5. Sure, it will cost a lot but it will probably outlast your truck. Another option is a Rock-On transmission. He's out of Denton and builds some solid transmissions.

If your budget alows i would have new raybestos clutches put in along with all the 65E goodies and dont forget the better alum accumulator piston. Nows a good time to get it done while its out of the vehicle. I have a built 65E and it wants me to feed it more power So i think a built 65e will work for you!

Well if it does wind up needing work, I'll probably have Rock On in Denton do the work since he has such a good rep. I've been doing a little readong on teh 4L65E and sounds like that would be the way to go. 40 pounds lighter than the 4L60E too! It ran great on the way home, so I'll just have to see what happens.

I'll have to see what happens. I may just need a rebuild ($2,000 ± is a bit much for me right now). I'm just going to drive like normal and when it goes, I guess I'll either get it rebuilt at Rock On or find a good deal on a 4L65E.

Most of the time the converter gets replaced or cut open and cleaned when a trans blows. You don't want to have all the gunk in there when you install a fresh one.

    later,
