    Question 14 bolt rear

ok i need all my experts to chime in on this one. i've been talkin t some guys on fullsizechevy about puttin a 14 bolt rear in my truck. which is a 2004 z71 1500. some say they will bolt right up but the guys there say you have to cut the perches off and move them. i'm just wondering. does anyone HERE know if there is a direct bolt up to my truck? i have no fab skill when it comes to welding. they have all got theres outta 90 model 2500 4x4s and i asked about getting one outta a 03-06, which is my body style, and they still think ill have to modify it in some way. help me if you can.

just go measure one and measure the distance to the centerline of your leaf springs, that will tell you if it will fit. Let me know if you want the distance measured on a 1991 14 bolt, I happen to have one laying on the floor in my garage.

Now that I don't know. Its a 1991 6 lug 14 bolt with the HUGE drum brake setup. Its most likely 4wd or a heavy half ton setup, maybe even a light duty 3/4 ton since my 95 diesel had a 6 bolt axle. I'll get the numbers this evening.

you will need to get the u bolts for it, most likely breaks and everything else SHOULD just line right up. oh, you will also need to get a new u joint for the drive shaft to fit, its 45 bux at O'Reilly auto.

Ricky, did you use your 10 bolt axle plate on the 14 bolt? The ones under the axle that fits around the tube? My 10 bolt tube is about 1/4 smaller diameter than the 14 bolt tube. And the brakes have a different pattern where it bolts to the axle tube.

Greg, he used the plates with the 14 bolt and I'm confused on the brake pattern your talking about. To the OP, I think the rear end Greg has is what you need. I THINK (not positive) the 14 bolts of your year model are 8 lug, but the axle will fit without having to relocate the perches. I don't know that they came out with a 6 lug 14 bolt in 03-06.

DOH! This is pissing me off not knowing for sure now, I'll have to go find this out for sure.

    The VHo's have a 14 bolt 6 lug and the SS's? 14 bolt, 9.5 ring gear 6 lug.

the only reason why i'm doin it is because eventually i want to be sittin on 37s with big HP and gears. so most say a 10 bolt won't hold up?
