Well...I got the call today from the wife. She was backing the burb out of the garage and when she put it in gear it died. She started it up again and when she put it in gear again the rpms dropped to about 300 and it almost died. She started it again and was able to get out of the alley but it died again at the stop sign. One thing she noticed was that the speedo was not registering the right speed....ie. when slowing down it would show 17-20mph when she was going maybe 5mph but the speedo would eventually drop to 0mph. My first thought is it is maybe the VSS or TPS since I have heard that those will occasionally cause these type of issues.

I'm going to check a few things when I get home but was curious if there was anything else that may be causing it. Fuel filter should be good as should fuel since we fill up at the same place and I haven't has any fuel issues. Anyone got any ideas about what I can check? TIA

What year Surburban? I am not positive, but the VSS shouldn't have anything to do with the idling properties, only the speedo problem...

Its an'02 . When I got home this evening I tried to duplicate the problem....no luck. Took it out for a drive and had zero problems. Started fine, idled fine with AC on or off. I'm going to check a few things in the a.m. to see what I can see. It could be the fuel pump. She's had two episodes of bad gas (filters were changed immediately during and after) and a case of vapor lock so the fuel pump has seen some tough times. I'm also going to check for codes to see if its thrown any.

I knew the VSS fed the speedo but was thinking the VSS controlled part of the shifting and maybe there might be something VSS/transmission related that was causing it to die. Indications being the bad speedo readings.

If you knew my luck you wouldn't rule anything out!
