What kind of performance shift should I expect going to a 160 thermo from a 180. I mean when the engine is hot it is WO anyway? Just a question.
Thanks![]()

IT WILL OPEN SOONER AND BEGIN TO COOL SOONER THAN A 180 STAT, THUS IN THERY KEEPING THE ENGINE COOLer for cooler intake air temps and lets the computer keep adding fuel and not retrding timing , on a hot day though, the truck will still run warmer than 160 , but the stat trys to keep it cooler. you wont feel a big diff stock, but it will work good if your tuned for it, id say 90% of the time my truck runs cool except for the really hot days it still sees 210![]()

To be specific, you'll feel NO difference with a 160-stat only change, because you must reprogram the PCM so your fans (latest models have elec fans) to come on earlier to help take advantage of the cooler temps. But still, you'll feel nothing; it's one of those mods that are necessary for better performance which must include increased air (cooler air!, better fueling and exhaust.
My temp gauge seldom moves above the approx 160 mark on the gauge even on hottest days, though typically the engine actual engine temps are closer to 175 on Gen 3 motors with 160 stats.
