4l60e: It shifts but will not engage - Any Suggestions

    Hi,

The swap is just about done, but for some reason, my transmission will not engage. The column shift arm is working (I can hear all the gears shift), but when I step into the gas, I don't get pull from any of the gears. It's an automatic 4l60e, and I did put a Corvette servo in it. It's got new fluid, a neutral safety switch, and it's used (supposedly only 68K miles) - apart from this, I don't know much about it. Any ideas or suggestions for trouble shooting? I'm wondering if it could be as simple as bubbles in the line.

    Thanks.

    Twas the Fluids

Thanks! It was the ATF fluid level. I thought I put enough in, but I wasn't even close. At every point I checked it, I never got a very accurate level reading: the truck was warmed up, I ran through all the gears, I checked in park like the wise dipstick recommended. The stick either looked completely dry or splattered all over (depending on how quickly I checked after adding fluid). Never had this issue before.

Just for others filling their fluid. A fresh trans and cooler/converter will take about 12qts or so.
Be sure to wipe off the dipstick several times, push it in and out several times to get all the fluid off the wall of the tube; then wipe the stick and check it a final time.
Notice the fluid will only show on one side sometimes, don't let that trick you. Fluid needs to show on both sides, evenly.

Sounds pretty damn simple, but you'd be surprised... lol.

Yep. I put 5 quarts in (that's what I found as a recommended amount on a website). Did lots of stick in/out and wipe, but it didn't matter, I guess I was only about half way there.

Thanks again. I still feel a little stupid, but now I feel slightly better about myself.
