What should I look for in my 5.3 purchase this Saturday?

I am heading to the local salvage yard this Saturday to shop for a LM7. The guy sells them for about $550 to $600 without the harness. What do I need to look for to get a good LM7. This is for a Carb conversion so drive by wire/cable does not matter. I just need to make sure it is a GEN III engine and not a 4.8.

So which numbers do I need to look for and what stands out to separate a 5.3 from a 4.8?

Which heads should I look for?

pull a spark plug and make sure it has dish pistons...if it has flat tops its a 4.8L. BTW the 4.8 is a gen III motor also

Good idea thanks. I knew the 4.8 is a GEN III, i wasn't specific in what I meant, sorry. I need to make sure it is a GEN III 5.3 and not a GEN IV 5.3. I bought the MSD 6LS-1 that works for the smaller reluctor wheel.

550! Ouch! Around here they go for 350 from oil pan to intake with injectors, throttle body, coils, manifolds, and water pump.

If you were in the northern part of Florida It would be cheaper for you to drive over here and pick one up!

Yeah I am about 30 minutes north of West Palm Beach so North Florida is a bit of a drive. I'm from Houston, Tx, If I was still there I could get a 5.3 for nearly nothing. It's all relative I guess, I enjoy the area here better.

Same place that sells 5.3's for 350 sells the 6.0 for 1300! Big price difference.

I keep finding 5.3s around VA for about 850 with 100000 on them... but 6.0s go for 14-1500!!!
