Thread: Steering knock in my 2004 Silverado 2500HD

Question Steering knock in my 2004 Silverado 2500HD

Hi, I have a 2004 Silverado 2500HD and I have that annoying knock that everyone complains of... I read the posts and I changed the intermediate shaft with the borgenson piece, but unfortunately I still have a knock. What else should I check? It sounds like it is in the steering column. It seems to be getting louder and louder and there is no play in the new shaft.
    I appreciate any help.
    Thank you
    Dan

All the dealer does is grease the intermediate shaft. Get you some lithium grease and coat it, thats what quieted mine down.

Mine has been doing the same thing for years. I had the dealership grease it years ago and work for a short period. I ordered the new upper intermediate shaft, GM part# 19153614 for $53. I will be putting it in this weekend, it is suppose to be a permamnent fix.. we'll see... I'll let you know how it works...

There is also a bearing in the end of the column you could check, also ive put a grease zerk that i thread into my intermediate shaft (stock) that all i have to do is remove the rubber boot from the firewall screw the zerk in, pump some grease and good to go for another 10/12 months. you could argue that you dont get enough grease around all the splines of the shaft but it works.

I really appreciate all the support and I will check all above, but very anxious to know if the upper shaft could be the culprit. The new borgenson has no play at all, really thought I had it.
    Thanks again guys

Ok, Monday I told you that I would install my new upper intermediate steering shaft. I installed it this morning and it stopped all the knocking noise!!! It is very tight and feels great. The new improved shaft is different from the original. The bottom shaft in the picture is the new design. The lower section that slides into the lower steering shaft is bigger making it very tight. The best $53 I have every spent!! Feels like a new truck again!!
