Found out why the SSS was weak.

well my SSS has been feeling really weak. always had a werid idle.. but never threw a code. would knock on 87(when gas was expsensive, only would get on it when needed and not full throttle, and there suppose to be on 93 anyway). but just felt weak. so my cousin and i checked the fuel pressure at idle and reving it up and in drive with a load it would sit at 62lbs.

we hooked the tech 2 up to it and saw it had 124 counts of misfire on cylinder one , and 36 on cylinder 3. then we checked the coil to see how strong they are and see if one wasnt shooting as long of spark. both cylinder checked out fine. which leads me to wires as plugs are new. but we decided to check cylinder 5 and when i started truck up it made this knocking noise like a rod. but then went away. oil pressure fine and has plenty of oil. we start it again and my cousin gets under truck and puts a screwdriver on the cat to listen. and its rattling horribly.

so we narrowed it down to cat making knock sensor go off and pull timing. and im ordering some taylor wires and gonna check all the plugs.

ive been hearing a slight rattle but anyone have any idea why the noise got extremely loud after checking the coils. do you check maybe well it was idleing with a cylinder down fuel got in there and broke it apart maybe?

fyi youre only saving 5 dollars going from 87 to 93...that isnt worth the cost of a motor or anything else

no thanks id rather throw some long tubes and no cats with muffler of unknown choice. i dont have problem here in florida, i drive my race truck around with no mufflers and never got pulled over for it.

but ya quik i understand the diff between 87 and 93 filling up and i constantly tell people just do what it needs its not a big difference. but for like 3 weeks when prem was almost 5 bucks i gave in and did it.

Does it have cats still? When more than one holes goes tits up on one side I start to wonder, when three holes on one side go crap I reach for the exhaust backpressure gauge.

yeah it still has cats. the driverside one is the one acting up. and cylinder 1 and 3 are the ones with the misfire. we narrowed it down to the wires im gettin new ones. and im gonna just do long tubes and elimate the cats and run a magnaflow or something muffler.

we checked cylinder 5 because my cousin just wanted to compare it to the ones that were acting werid. im also gonna run a compression check this weekend just to see where they all stand before i slap the nitrous kit off my blue truck on it for some fun lol

    welll little update.

went and had chevy replace the driver side cat. truck jumped up to 16.8 average mpg. from low 14's. also it will spin tires on 20 punch (by spin i mean a tad bit then go lol). also no knock is shown and misfire is gone.

My brother in law's 5.3 Suburban blew the engine because of a bad cat. I also had rattling from the cat in my Safari van so I put one on from my Silvy since I had just removed them and went cat-less.

Glad you were able to fix yours before any damage.
