    Rear end advice/decision

Easy Ricky Bobby, not that rear end.

OK my stock '68 truck 12 bolt rear...

I can only get a Detroit Locker in a 3.73 & up case. I am not sure I want gears that tall for the turbo application.

For lower gears (numerically) I would have to resort to a limited slip of some sort (Eaton Truetrac, Eaton posi, Strange or Moroso). Or I could get a Powertrax and reuse the factory carrier. I am not sure that is the safe bet though. I can upgrade the axles for about $280/pair.

So, what do I do? Are those limited slips OK? I had run an Auburn unit years ago with no problems, but those don't come up as applicable for the truck 12 bolt.

BTW, I am not made of money, so I think full-tilt custom rear end is out of the picture.

Run the 12 bolt with whatever for now then when you do something about those junk bars in the back upgrade to a 9'' of some sort... And be on the lookout for a housing, axles and locker until then... Two words: Swap meets!!

Go with the 12 bolt and the 3.73. It will help a bit that the 4L80E's first gear is not as low as the 4L60E's. There is not that much difference between 3.42 and 3.73's.

You know my opinion from the past. A truck 12-bolt is a lot weaker than a car 12-bolt (pinion stem diameter and probably pinion bearings are really small) and a car 12-bolt needs help for big power (but survive a lot better than most/any 8.5" 10-bolt).

Will you street drive it a lot? If not, buy a spool and strong upgraded axle shafts (bet they don't make lower numeric spools) and call it good until the the pinion snaps off.

If it were "I me guy man" I'd put a mini spool in there or weld the spiders and call it good 'til it grenaded.

It's just a toy, so it will see Mexico trips and trips to SAR/Temple.

Some cruising from time to time.
