they are basically the same. I truthfully dont know if they are interchangeable. It should be the same as mine and I have the 8.6, as far as what you need get a rebuild kit from summit its pretty complete for putting all new bearings in. (why have a brand new set of gears and all and crap bearings) and as far as it goes richmond gears after that. If you dont have a posi unit and still using a g80 that was stock I would look into upgrading.

Yup--4.10s are awesome..except for when driving 70+ mph on the freeway--you turn some pretty high RPMs...

eBay Motors: GM 8.6 CHEVY 10 BOLT 4.11 RING AND PINION INSTALL PKG (item 330263169396 end time Jan-15-09 04:58:54 PST) this is what you need... exactly... comes with the install package. And I can vouche for this product, I have the same thing and it works great and is very quiet.
8.5 and 8.6 have the same ring and pinion. the 8.6 locker is different than the 8.5 one. Youll need a 8.6 locker. I like My auburn Pro. And youll love the difference from the gear too.
Oh it helps a ton if you have a press.
