Thread: 3.42s to 4.10s

    3.42s to 4.10s

Am I under estimating the difference 4.10s will make going from 3.42s? I know how gears work but its just hard for me to believe that I'm going to feel that much power to the wheels. Does anybody have times before and after a gear swap? And how bad will mileage drop?

I had a 01 ecsb 5.3l a few years back and did a 3.73 to 4.10 swap. It made the truck feel a few hundred pounds lighter, and a lot more fun... As far as the mpg difference the 4.10's helped me in town but there wasnt a big jump when you drove highway. If I remember corectly the city was about 15 and highway at best was 16.5, but that was when I didnt care and drove 85. Anyways, hoped this helped out a little but I do believe you will enjoy the 4.10's way more than the 3.42's

You'll be able to tell for sure. I went from 3.08 to 3.42 to 4.10 to 3.73 in my Chevelle and I could always tell a good bit of difference in the way it drove. Mileage wasn't a concern with a BBC and a Holley controlled fuel leak.

Thanks for the input i think i'm convienced that i should do a gear swap before anything else. Thing is... I have a nelson tune so i would like to get gears and LTs and ORY to install in a weekend so I only have to get one re-tune. Any other effective, small mods I could do in the same weekend that I would need a re-tune for?

truthfully the only reason you need a retune is for the gears, you really only need retunes for major mods like cam, gears, injectors, or some type of power adder....but yeah in my old truck i did the swap from 3.42's to 4.10 and i noticed a diff from take to just normal cruising on the highway going up a hill it wasnt wanting to kick down a gear or 2 just to make it up but the mileage did drop like 2mpg so instead of cruising 80 i slowed down to 70 and that covered the diff

Awesome thanks alot... i was looking for some people who had went through the situation so he or she could fill me in on the little extra power thats felt, transmission shifting and the all important gas mileage issue. I'll place my order for gears tomorrow... Does most everyone recommend randy's ring and pinion or should I look elsewhere... Also any suggestions on brands would be great...

I also went from 3.42's to 4.10's. It was a major difference in power, gas milage went up in town and dropped a bit on the highway, but not much.

I went for 3.42 to 4.10 in my 07 not too long ago myself. I can surely feel a difference, but really not as much as I thought I would have. im still getting a average of 18MPG with the 4 cylinder mode turned off. I think the main reason im not getting the response I thought I would is because of my torque management still being on. but I dont regret the swap, I love it!
