    Question start up knock???

Ok guys, so when I start my truck..I get a slight "knocking" sound for the first minute or so. Now that it's getting colder it seems to last longer than the usual minute. I have 60 psi of oil pressure, and I run 91 octane gas.

    Any ideas?? Thanks.

The noise is normal. GM uses low-friction forged pistons in these engines, they are smaller when not at normal operating temps. So when you start your engine cold, you are hearing piston slap. Do not worry about it. When I worked for GM, if a customer called and complained about the noise, GM would issue the customer a "component letter" that covered the engine, all internals, all seals and gaskets, water pump, oil pump, etc, for 10 years or 100,000 miles, whichever came first, to give peace of mind to the customer.

You should use 5W-30 year round. Synthetic primes thru the oiling system faster if it is very cold, and is better if you "wind up" the engine frequently. But even here in AK, I just use Pennz 5W-30 non-synthetic.

Oh man Ive been trying to convince my girlfriend that I needed a valve job and that i would need a new cam and everything.
I hope thats its only piston slap. What weight oil should i be running in the cold? i have almost 120,000 on my 5.3 now. thanks
