Hey guys, I've been looking for a newer truck/suv lately, and an aquaintance of mine is selling a 1996 4wd 4 door tahoe. it has 90,000 miles, he is the second owner, and it is the LT model with power everything and leather. seats are in excellent condition, and it has a 6 inch lift with newer 33/12.5015 bfg muds on weld wheels. other than a gibson exhaust, motor is stock. he's asking $8,000 obo, does this sound like a good deal? I'm in southern california just fyi.

8,000 sounds good, but 90,000 is alot of miles, you could always do an ls1 swap in it though? !SWEET!

you think 90,000 miles is alot for a suv thats 11 years old? any owners with the vortec 5.7 thoughts? i had a 96 s-10 with the vortec 4.3 that i sold with 145,000 miles that still ran great, is the 5.7 similar?

When I sold my 97 Vortec 5.7 truck had 330,000 miles on it and still ran strong.

were there any major problems you guys ran into around 100,000 miles? So $7,000 sounds like a good price? thanks guys

Actually, 96 was the first and best year of the 5.7L Vortec. I had a 96 and it ran strong. The 97's and 98's had leaky intakes, fuel slider problems, and problems with the EVO (Electronic Variable Orifice) for the power steering. The 4L60e that is in it WILL go out at some point -- even with 90,000 on an 11 year old vehicle. I wouldn't tow or rag on it too much. You should be able to get another 40k-50k out of the tranny if you treat it nicely. The 96 will be a good buy, but $8k is wayyyy too much. Even if that thing was it mint condition, it would only be worth $7,250...Maybe--and like I said, in EXCELLENT condition. I would offer him $6500 and see what happens. Good luck.
