These trucks look silly with the 16s and even up to the 19s IMO. I want a wheel to fill out the fender. To each his own.

Funny how opinions differ on that. I'm in the camp that any wheel larger than an 18 looks silly on just about anything, especially old trucks and muscle cars. Regardless, I'm pleasantly surprised to see a general concensus that the 5.3 is enough engine for the truck, most other places you go you'll basically get a reaction that sounds something like "5.3? you're wasting your time. Do a 6.0 at least, or ideally a 6.2" As was said, build it right and you'll get plenty out of it, but, don't expect it to be quick.

I think you are really gonna need torque more than anything. Ideally a LQ9 with some good heads and a cam on the smaller side for duration (222/224) would be best. Gears will be very very important 4.56s at least. Other than that it should be a very fun build. No matter which motor you pick I would look at raising the compression and go boosted if the budget allows. The toughest part of that truck is getting it moving.

If anything I'd go stroker... And if you're going that far you could always take your 5.3 and punch it out to a 5.7.. if memory serves that puts you up to a 383, making a puney little 6.0l small by comparison (364, for those doing the math at home). 6.0s get a premium price so you wouldn't have a TON more into it, but you'd end up with a lot more motor IMO.

Unfortunately, it costs the same to build a stroker 5.7 as it does a 402,403,404,408,410.... If you're building a stroker, all you need is a block. 6.0 blocks aren't expensive.

There is so much wrong with this. Please stop.

OP: I'd seriously consider a supercharger. Nothing like boost to launch with. A 5.3 with a 4l80 is going to need deep gears to not feel anemic. That first gear really sucks the power launching, but it does have much better spacing once you get moving. I notice a huge difference from a stop getting out of my denali (6.0 w/4l65e) to a work truck (K3500- 6.0 w/4l80e). The denali launches way harder with the 3.06:1 first, vs. the 4l80s 2.48:1, plus the heavier truck doesn't help. I would definitely suggest going with a 4l80 because they are way stouter, just be aware it'll feel like a turd from a stop. It also has a lower overdrive (.75 vs. .7) so add a few RPMs at 70 compared to a 60.

I'm not saying don't do it, I'm just saying I think you'll regret putting a cam/tune into a 5.3 unless you include a whipple on top with the appropriate cam from the get-go.

And it's a good thing you're not too concerned with mileage. Doesn't matter if it's a 4.8 or an 8.1, in a truck that big they suck gas. My 00' with a 5.7 doesn't get any better mileage than any of the 7.4 trucks I've driven, these big trucks just suck gas no matter what.

4l80 has been part of my plan from the get go. Had one in my CC. I would like to do a6.0 with LS3 to end and good cam to match. Maybe later go boosted. one thing i'm on the edge about Is a static drop or bagging it. I've wanted a bagged and bodied CC dually for some time now. I'm sure I won't body drop it but still thinking about bagging it. May be picking up some shaved down 24.5s in the next few days.
