ghey, the both of you, yeah, front pump could possibly be the problem but i quess cycling through the gears would be the first thing to try, if you do that and it stops then you are good to go, if not, try whatever is next on the list

If you hear this noise while the truck is standing still in gear then I would say it is a pump whine. A worn pump bushing could cause this. Also I have seen in TH400 transmissions if the filter is plugged up this will also happen. Might want to drop the pan and do a quick service to see if it helps any.

If I read correctly you replaced a flex plate? Maybe it is bent and is causing the pump gear to get into the crescent of the pump. Best of luck getting it sorted out.

First things first: DO NOT DRIVE IT ANY MORE. DON'T EVEN START IT!

    Thanks Keefus.

But I would have said "What WERE you thinking..." NOT "What WHERE you thinking..."

Well G--it is not the worst thing in the world to NOT to fill the converter before installing...cause the pump will do a perfectly fine job doing that on its own. BUT pre-filling it is something that is just known that you do without saying--kinda like your Ginger ass having to put on sunscreen before you go out into the daylight.

And what is the BS about you "Garrisson-Rigging" the dipstick into the case? Is it fully seated into the rubber grommet? If not, you can be receiving a false reading.

Like everyone else, the whine you are hearing is more than likely from the pump. It has air in it obviously.

And I also presume that you filled the case with enough fluid, started the truck, cycled through the gears (and made sure you had positive gear engagement), then let the fluid warm up, add if needed--THEN go for a drive...

If you did those steps and it did not whine initially, then there are other things not jiving. Read below...

    Is the filter seated properly?

Was the new flexplate installed correctly? Same amount of shims on each of the converter's ears?

Before I pull everything, I would definitely pull the bottom inspection plate and start measuring the flexplate's distance from the block in like 10 different spots along the entire circumference. I would also rotate the converter and check to see if all of the shims are the same depth and nothing is misaligned.

One of the big reasons to prefill the convertor is that there is are bearings and clutches inside it same as inside the transmission. You need to soak them in fluid for a while before putting the convertor to use. It also saves time on how long it takes to fill the convertor after startup.
