Uh....yeah. Heater core is NOT a fun thing to do. Pretty much have to take your ENTIRE dash off. I would do what Nathan said--try using a water hose to flush first. Try a short, lower pressure back-wash first, then higher pressure normal flush.

Doubt it's plugged. Not common unless it's a C-car Caddy or and S/T like mine. Dexcool only turns to crap on vehicles with a non-pressured overflow AND propensity for coolant leaks. When Dexcool is subjected to oxygen and heat cycles is turns to sand. Sealed systems like those on the GMT800 and 900 don't expose the coolant to the air and they don't have leaks. The GMT400's have a vented overflow and leak from several areas.
+1. In my 4 years as a GM tech I never replaced a heater core on a C/K truck. 99% were on S/T trucks. Most common problem an C/K's was the tep door actuator. I would definatel look into that 1st. If I remember right it is on the Pass. side on top of the HVAC box.

so i pulled the heater hoses and used the hose to flush the core out like nathan suggested. well im pretty sure it worked. it wouldnt flow the normal direction but i soon as i flushed it through the outlet it pumped out some less than quality looking junk. im sure brown nasty gunk isnt good for the cooling system. what do you guys use to clean out the system before replacing the coolant? beside the actual machine. thanks for all the help guys. its nice to have heat again since its getting cooler outside. gary
