Well, after installing the salvage yard engine into my truck I drove it about 20 miles and started hearing the awful sound of rods knocking. During the rebuild I have been trying to determine what the cause could have been and have traced it back to the oil filter. When installing the engine I dented the filter. I would have never thought this would have been an issue. I cut the filter open and found that the filter media sits on a plate on the bottom of the filter canister. The dent in the filter put an open passage-way between the bottom of the filter canister and the element allowing any debris that was in the engine to travel through the system. Never in my wildest dream did this dent in the bottom of the filter ever cross my mind as to possibly ever causing a problem.
Bottom line... this became a $700 oil filter. Would have been a lot more expensive if I couldn't do the work myself.
