I'm going to be buying a complete new rear end for my truck, and I've decided on everything except for what kind of LSD to put in it. Its a GMC C1500, so it is a 2WD. Reason for the LSD is I will be needing it for more traction once I drop my rebuilt LQ9 in. Also, in about 3 months, I'll be going to Minot AFB in North Dakota where they get a reasonable amount of snow every winter. My question is, how well does the TrueTrac perform in the snow? I've read mixed reviews; some say it works perfect because the resistance on the spinning wheel is just enough to get the other going, but some say it isn't enough resistance and it just functions as an open differential. I know an ARB Locker (probably my 2nd choice) would do the job and lock it up perfectly at the flip of a switch, but I really like how the TrueTrac is silent, near bulletproof, and doesn't need my intervention to do it's job. So, exactly how do they do in low traction situations like snow and ice?

Just get a 4wd. I have a auburn pro posi and in the slightest bit of rain. The rear end is all over the place.
I hit the Auto 4wd button and it is like glue to the road till i nail it real hard.
99RCSB Broke because I wasted thousands and thousands of dollars on my truck.

Buying a new vehicle isn't really an option for me. I'm only an E1. If you're not familiar with military pay, thats pretty much nothing. By keeping my old truck and putting money into it over time, I'll have an investment (sounds weird, I know), not to mention a backup vehicle. If things take a turn for the worse, I'll put some good ol' chains on the tires and weigh the rear end down with some bags of concrete. No big deal.

I like the Auburn. If your truck is low HP you may be able to get away with running a G80 factory limited slip unit. You can buy them on Ebay or find them on LS1tech or PerformanceTrucks.com for $100-$125 used. Be sure you buy a 30 spline unit if your truck is newer than a 1988 model. Buy as new of a unit as you can find. I saw one out of a 2004 Avalanche for $125 on PT.com

See, I don't know much about what parts are good out there. I'm still building my knowledge base on the whole automotive field right now. I was a computer and cabling technician before coming to the Air Force, and now I do missiles. All I know about vehicles is what dad taught me back in the day and what I pick up on forums and whatnot today. I'm open to all kinds of suggestions, but I don't want to be buying a new vehicle. Since I'll be in a place where it snows a lot with my 2WD, I just want to know what locker/LSD works best in those icy conditions. I've read mixed reviews on the TrueTrac, so I'm kind of unsure. Which one is best in the ice and snow?

Just move to south Texas. No worry about ice and snow there!! The only chains we use are to pull trucks out of the mud!!!
