I did do it the right way butt plug! Three tacs and thats it. F$&@ing hardened steel. I wish we were still working with the old style steel.
Did you just put three spot welds or a couple of small beads and were they spaced the furthest apart as possible. I have heard the sheetmetal on our truck sis very tempermental due to being so thin. Were you using a MIG? You may have had it turned up too high and were running too much amperage and heated it up too quick. Junkyards werent too bad on prices for tailgates when I looked, they wanted about 220-250.

Holy crap, that sucks. Maybe Daniel can get you a deal on a new one and weld it up for you. He seems to have good luck with welding the skins without warping the metal too much. I always worry about the sheet metal warping when I mig weld on mine. I've been very lucky considering how little experience I have with my mig welder.
