I want to swap a ls1/ t56 into my 97 obs rcsb chevy 1500.

Would I be able to get it to pass cali smog? has anyone here done it and if so, got any tips/ advice?

Also, is it true the fuel pump in my truck now will handle what the ls1 needs?

Will the stock radiator work or do you recommend getting something bigger?

The stock rad will work fine. You will have to go through your local referee station to check for legality. AFAIK it is legal to put any pollution controlled newer engine in any older vehicle as long as you install all smog related equipment during the install. Get a 2002 Fbody engine since it doesn't have an EGR or smog pump requirement, if your referee station will approve the conversion. In TX we use most of the CARB regulation in the largest cities but older vehicles that were not OBDII are tested on a sniffer vs. the electronic checking of the OBDII port. Since your truck was a 97 I am sure it will have to be electronically checked.

If you had the Vortec V8 then the fuel pump should work. Dead head the fuel line into a pressure gauge and see how much pressure it outputs. It should be somewhere near 80 psi.

I'm thinking 2001 and 2002 only. Don't quote me on it. I know the 98s are smogged hard and the PCM/wiring are crap, plus the block isn't that great so steer away from them.

Cool thanks, ive still got quite a bit of homework before I start the swap. But, it really doesn't sound too bad. In a couple weeks Im gonna bag it then at the middle/ end of the summer ill do the swap. Ill post up here when I get it done.

If you've got any other things that will make it easier/ better please let me know.

Thanks, Gary

the f-body used a "secondary air injection reactor" i call it a hair dryer under the drivers wheelwell.
this will have to be retained for the f-body LS1 swap. dual cats and four HO2S required also.
depending on the referee, the canister purge and vent valve might to in question. and lastly,
fuel tank pressure sensor (part of EVAP) may be a pisser...
you might get away with the looks and turn it off in the programming.
just a heads up...

WHOA!! STOP!!!! Don't get an LS1 if you want it to pass Cali SMOG. California engine swap rules states that if you swap engines your engine needs to come out of a similar vehical. Truck engines can only go in trucks same with car engines, they can only go in cars.

You beat me to it. It will be legal (even with a T-56) if you use a 5.3 or a 6.0 out of a 1/2t truck and retain all the emissions for the engine. If you get an engine from a manual truck you'll be ahead of the game.

the manual trans option was only for 4.8 and 6.0L GenIII. 5.3L never had a
manual transmission option.
i used to make harnesses and as long as the emissions equipment was retained
for that year model engine, the smog stations would be ok with it. didnt
matter truck engine in car, car engine in truck. just that year/engine equalled
the correct emissions package. if it had an air pump, that engine better have
an air pump...
now as for a 5.3L GenIII VIN on a 5.7L LS1 engine package, you might have some
hard convincing for the offical.
