I had an earlier post on a pinging issue. I'm running boosted about a month now pinging from nearly every stop light at around 2k rpms and now I'm begining to wonder how long before she just blows a hole in a piston or something...?? Working on getting my 3rd tune from Allen.....but from the shipping confirmation email I got last Friday, it looks like it was shipped UPS Ground to Alaska (that's a least a week away)...

AEM wideband is showing between 14.7-15.3 when it's pinging. Allen said that was normal...but it still confuses me a bit since EVERYONE else I talk to says that's lean for FI. I have only done WOT a few times but when I do hit it,,,,it does not ping and it runs at around 12.4-13 on the AEM wideband.

I don't want to fry my engine because I do need this vehicle as my daily driver and snowplowing season is upon us....GOD I just hope plowing range IS NOT 2K rpms.....

Even tried mixing a can of TORCO racing gas concentrate to 10 gals of gas...should have give me around 95 octane rating....still pinging away...

I'm very close to yanking the whipple out and going back to N/A....... Have you ever tried driving and keeping it under 2k rpms???? Every frickin soccer mom in a mini van is either riding your ass or leaving you behind....

Here are some good numbers to go by.

Normal driving, 14.5 to 15.7, I actually run the Av. at 16 under normal driving and light loads.
Under boost, I like to see about 11.5 for 5psi. 8psi, I run it a tad richer at 11.1-11.3.
KR under boost is no good, a little non audible KR is also acceptable, but anytime you hear the detonation, that isn't good.
The a/f ratio during those 2Krpms isn't causing the detonation, that a/f ratio is ok, but what is causing it, is I made the timing table a little too agressive for what your truck likes, or your truck isn't timing friendly. I pulled some timing across the board and during low and midrange to help out.
Some trucks I run across just don't like timing, which is where the power is.

Also, the truck shouldn't be pinging, that timing table is pretty much standard, so with a little tweaking we'll get it. It's just your truck needs a little attention.

Just try to be easy on it until the retune gets there, sorry for the slow shipment, we usually ship 3 day to alaska, I'm not sure why ground was selected.

thanks,
allen

I really think you should consider HPTuner, so that you can log your runs and email the logs to Allen. He will then email you the adjusted tune back and you upload it. This is exactly what I do since I live in Indiana. I don't want Allen having to guess at the fix. He looks at the log I send him and fixes what needs to be fixed.
Being forced induction you need that tune to be dead on.
The way I figured, it was cheap insurance to buy HPTuner.
Good Luck.

Thanks Allen for the update.....I'm driving like a blind old lady at the moment. Just trying to take it easy. According to UPS, new tune should arrive Friday. Wouldn't you know, every Yahoo with a Honda and a muffler is trying to run me....they see the gauge pod and instantly begin revving their engines....

Believe me, I trust your opinion regarding tuning more than any "armchair" tuner I've spoken with, particularly when dealing with boosted applications.

HPTuners is next on my list.....waiting for my Paypal account to go down just a tad more so I can charge it up again with HPtuners....

So Allen,,,, if I have HPTuners, would that help me in logging data you need, and would you be able to email me an updated tune rather than the UPS ($$&#036 boogie??? I'll order it this week if it'll help the situation.

I really love the power of the whipple when you hit it......but with the pinging I'm not hitting hardly at all.

It sure will, plus it's a good tool to have in your situation. I know it's an added cost, but I really don't recommend, buying hptuner as a beginner and trying to tune your truck, since you have the tune I'll walk you through the steps and we'll get it right.
I'm sure this next pcm will not ping, but that's less power because of less timing, we need to try and figure out why your truck doesn't like timing.

talk to you soon,
allen

OK....I'm convinced.....I'm ordering the HPTuners Pro tonight...I figure $100 more for Pro is worth it to tie my wideband into the picture.

According to Chris at HPTuners, they are doing SEMA next week, and no orders will be shipped after this Friday for about a week. So....if anyone else needs something,,,, need to hit them up by Thursday...else it'll be a another week before they even look at the order.

Gah...UPS missed one day on my delivery, my shipment was stuck in transit for one day,,,description says "lost at terminal in TN...they found it the next day..... So now I have to wait till Monday for the tune to arrive........Only good news is it started snowing yesterday which is slowing down everyone (soccer mom's have stopped racing me now...they can barely move now).....

I just put half a tank of 90 octane (no booster, no TORCO..just straight gasoline) and it seems to run smoother, still pings but for some reason just feels smoother.

I ordered HPTuners yesterday......but they shipped it Ground UPS too......so I'm playing the wait and see game for the moment.

I will be alright. Towing a trailer I get knock at 2k rpms have for a loooong time. Too freakin busy to get another tune from The MAN. I just floor it and the knock goes away. 120mph with a 14' enclosed trailer is a little too fast however. I could be wrong but unless the knock is real bad. I would not worry so much.
99RCSB Broke because I wasted thousands and thousands of dollars on my truck.
