Hello everyone,
I have a 1970 chevy pick up that has been through 4 motors and two brothers. I have a 72 402 with the works. The truck has gone from longbed to shortbed stepside, small block to big block and I came across a sweet 68 front end that it is now sporting.
I'm in Iraq and will be home in a month, so right now we have some down time and with that time I have been searching eBay for parts. While looking I came across a 6.0 long block at a great price. I bought it. I looked up the casting numbers and the block is #12551364 and the heads are 317, because of the heads puts it at 98-04 truck - according to Mortec.com . I was always affraid of messing with the LT motors and terrified of the LS motors because of the sensors and coil paks and such. But the hp numbers are great for stock motors and I'm no longer terrified of them.
So now I'm looking for any tips to increase hp's and still have an everday driver. The old 70 with the 68 front end will be taking on another trans plant, when it's all said and done.
1. Are the LS motors Vortecs or not?
2. What does LS stand for?
3. Can I use an LS6 intake on the 6.0 for a simple increase in power with the 317 heads?
4. Are the 317 heads good or would it be a good idea to try to get 243 heads or LS1/2/6?
Thanks for the oppertunity to post my questions and we'll see ya soon!
