Do a search for "The Oil Bible." A lot of the sales FLUFF is taken out and the test results are explaned so you can understand what they really mean to your engine. There are differences even in 5w-30 to 10w-40 from the same company, more than just viscosity. Read more than one persons opinion, some are nothing but

If you do be ready for your engine to start springing leaks everywhere. Engines(actually their gaskets) with higher mileage don't like to change to synthetic oil. I did it some years back and the damn thing started leaking oil from everywhere.

Have any of you priced synthetic oil lately? Exspcially Royal Purple . That stuff is like $80 or $90 a case!

That's kind of a myth. I have a bunch of trucks that leak the same whether they have 10w40 dinosaur oil or 5w30 synthetic or 5w50 synthetic. Usually, if it starts leaking oil after putting synthetic in then there are other problems (ie: the seals are shot and instead of drying out and caking like dinosaur oil does it stays liquid).

I also have a 1999 5.3L that wasn't treated kindly for its first 156,000 miles as far as oil changes go. The truck was basically serviced at a bare minimum according to the book. I've since put 9,000 miles on it with 5w30 Mobil 1 and it neither leaks it nor burns it. I can't say the same for the front axle.
Of course I understand the Jeep thing, you bought all my old parts.

i have always used mobil or royal. in my grand prix i used mobil for a while and saw no hp gain. then i went to royal at about 45000 miles and noticed a big change. i saw on hp tv they swiched all fluids in a z28 and i dynoed about 12 hp right off the bat. i started with mobil in my truck a 2000 mls and then went to royal after about 8000-10000 mls. didnt get anything then probably b/c my motor wasnt worn down yet. i only used it in motor and rear b/c i knew my trans was messed up already and that i was gonna swap it out and its a good amout of money to change the tran fluid considering its just oil at 8 a qrt. my buddy swears by amsoil but i never used it. thats my input

danny

also i have worked at a lube shop now for 3 yrs and u can go from any brand to any grade. neither will cause any damage or leaks or whatever. when u start messing with weights is when u see changes like that

I don't think it is a myth. I've had it happen to me, and I've heard many others say it too. You even said it. Whatever the reason may be,the seals being shot or whatever because of high mileage, it happens. Thats what I was referring to was a high mileage vehicle(with old seals) being switched from dino to Syn.

I just did my switch to synthetic this evening. I went with AMSOIL...everything I read was pretty convincing. Anyway, I took it out and maybe it's in my head, but it seemed a little smoother. Either way, the protection they say it gives is worth it.

Yeah me too. One of wifeys relatives had a stroke, so I think the words: "I'm heading out to the track" are better left unspoken.

Besides I think I need a tune. Either that or this just drives way different than I expected.
