The internally regulated Corvette fuel filter we run does the same thing as the regulator being on the return line. The return side of the fuel filter has a regulator spring that bleeds off any pressure greater than 58lbs. The older style fuel rails have the advantage of cooler fuel since it's always circulating but if you're in all out performance mode you probably won't notice the difference since the pump will be working it's butt off trying to keep up.
