Think there is an interior design person amongst us. And he does similar work for bars/game rooms. Maybe he will see this.

Kerrige is super technical and smart he could point you in the right direction too!

Just like anything in the car world you need to start with a budget. My aunt has a badass system in her home, but she spent like 5-6k on it. At the same time you need a decent budget to build a nice system. I would stay away from simple all n one box deals from best buy etc. I also will tell you Bose is nice, but you are paying for a name. Much less expensive systems will give you the same results. The rules are pretty similar to car audio as far as where to spend your money. (amp>cd player, rms>peak power, etc) You get what you pay for, but a budget build isn't impossible either.

I've had my Bose system for at least 10 years, still going strong. 100 disc vault, 500w subwoofer, completely wireless speakers..$1,900 out the door.

If I were getting a surround system for my house it would be either a Sony system or a Bose. I have been thoroughly impressed with the Bose home theater systems over the last couple years.

Not sure how serious you are with this but it can get real expensive in a hurry!!! Lol keep reading and learn the major differences of the two types you have HTIB (home theater in a box) and then buildable surround sound systems with recievers amplifiers subs bookshelf speakers etc., I helped do home theater deliveries and installs for magnolia (best buy high end entertainment division) for a few months and have seen all different types from party deck setups to 25K+ theater room setups and it all depends what you want what I would do is have a REAL home theater specialist come spec out the room or area and have them spec out what you need I've heard calibrated 1000 dollar systems sound better than a pieced together 5K dollar system it's all what you want with it best deal is get an educated person with experience to hook you up get it right the first time and it will prevent you from constantly upgrading, just like your truck hahaha

What kerrige said. I wouldn't buy an in the box set up again. I have had a Sony set up I think it was about 1500, it sucked ass. I wouldn't buy bose, you can put something way better together for less IMO.
