I want to use the stock '90 GMC 1500 transmission with the Gen III engine. I have read a lot of articles on using the 700R4 and having to use a spacer to get the distances right. I would like to retain this setup so is there a way to bolt up this transmission to the new engine?

buy a 99 or 2000 6.0L and it all should bolt right in. The crankshaft flange is thicker on those years and will place the flywheel at the right location. Now, I don't know if you'll be able to use the starter from either engine with the LQ4/5spd combination.

I already have a 2005 6.0 liter engine so getting an older engine would be difficult, especially just for the transmission. I have read several articles where a GM spacer or adapter was put on the crankshaft and older 700R4 transmissions worked good.

My guess is the input shaft to the 5 speed is too short and would need an adapter with a pilot bearing. Any help would be appreciated.
