Spambots countermeasure suggestion

Captcha is typically so difficult i can't make out what the letters or numbers are, yet a spam bot knows it too easy. I have added a question to the registration form which hopefully will keep them at bay.

we don't use phbb, but we're looking at something else that will help out.
it's a double sided sword, deal with a few bots or lots of new members complaining they can't post due to the restrictive registration process.
