With the current job I will be able to buy a home in one place and travel from location to location from there. It will not require me to find a new home with a promotion.

F' that stay OIL FIELD. If you bust your ass you can advance as far as you want. I started as a Nub rigger/ROV tech. Now a company man for Shell in their highest producing field in the world. 1/4 of all Shell's profits. Aim high and dont give up advancement comes from sore backs and strong minds.

With no oilfield experience you'd be looking at a shop job (50-60) hours a week at 10 an hour. I'm sure it's not worth it

You just need to interview with the right place. You might be able to get on with a field service company like luke used to be with, are you wanting to go land side of oil field or offshore? I can shoot you some suggestions on field service companies for off shore. Just let me know.
