    carrier bearing replacemnet

Hey guys so my carrier bearing is looking a little rough so i was going to change it out. Does anyone know how much of a job it is and maybe some tips or tricks I have heard that its as easy as R an R but I have also heard that it needs to be pressed on and balanced. Thanks in advance.

Well being that your truck is not seeing snow It shouldn't be too bad, my S10 carrier bearing went bad and we had a beast of a time! We did have to press it back in with a shop press, but we never had it balanced and I drive it everyday and never had problems with vibration.

They aren't too bad to change. I just cut the cages off then cut through the inner race with a cut off wheel to split it and knock it off the carrier. There's a tool that slides inside the carrier over the new bearing to install it. You can either knock it on with a hammer or use a press. Assuming you wouldn't have the tool you could just use the old inner race over the new bearing to get it on. Just make sure the new bearing is all the way pressed onto the carrier.

whatever you do, dont cut it off with a torch cuz a lot of times it tweaks the stub a little from the heat. i work at a driveshaft shop, i see it every day. best way to do it is use a press to press the old one off, and a press to put the new one on. but i know most people dont have that luxury. using a cutoff wheel is a much better idea than a torch.
