There are two freeze plugs in the block, remove both of them. One large one on the driver side and one small one on the passenger side. Once they are out all the water will drain out of the block. I do this every time I pull an engine so that I don't dump water all over the drive or garage. A large low profile tub works to catch all the fluid. The plugs both are allen head, 17mm and 13mm I believe.

pull the pump after draining the water. You'll lose a little water from pump but not much. Many say that if you have the black seals on the pump you should replace them, they're notorious for leaking. There are some really good writeups on how to do a cam swap. Try a little searching and you'll find some good ones but none of them mention that you can pull the freeze plugs to keep from dumping water into the block when pulling the heads. BTW, if all you're doing is head swap you don't have to pull the water pump.

I dump it all over because I can. It's the orange water pump (and intake for that matter) gaskets that are leak FAILS. That 17mm drain plug is not a cheap one to buy a socket for....

I don't worry about the coolant going in or out. I have to vacuum the head bolt holes out anyway for proper torque and scraping the rubber left by the gaskets takes a LONG time to accomplish. During that process, lots of "stuff" gets in all manner of nooks and crannies. I wipe the cylinders out and pour lots of oil down the valley (if the cover is off) then let the pan drain for a lllllooonnnngggg time.

I use a sprayer made to siphon/spray fluids when I need to get any foreign objects or liquids out of a bolt hole, works really well. It's one of the type you hook up to a compressor and when it sprays air it siphons the junk out of the bolt holes via the hose hooked to the nozzle.

Also to clean out the bolt holes, if you dont have a tap, take a bandsaw or hacksaw and basically quarter an old head bolt from the bottom and spread it out a touch. Boom homemade cleanout tap.

I take an old bolt to my bench grinder and cut a notch in it to simulate a cutting edge, this is to remove any old thread lock material. I only do this once because I put studs back in place. Just what I do, not telling anyone that they should just communicating my way of doing things.
