Just to step in again, @ quick, that's a state law, every ins co is required to. varies by what your state requirements for ins are though. Oh yeah, and if you have geico, don't drive your vehicle into mexico, you're not covered, at all. For those of you that do, PLEASE check with your company to make sure yours crosses the boarder, it may not.

I've never submitted my plate in 16yrs of driving. For them to be assholes to do That just leaves reason to leave them

Thanks for that info Nate...does a lot for me 6 years later.
I talked to my agent after it happened and he let me know that he was also very upset with the settlement that they gave. He said "you pay for full coverage to get the worth of the vehicle if something like this happens...why would you pay almost double to get half of what its really worth?"

Pretty sure its not them being out to get you....its the law that if your vehicle is registered it has to be insured. If you drop your insurance for the winter that would mean that the vehicle SHOULD not be registered as well....hence them requesting you turn in the plate to it.

Do you guys not own your plates? I have to have insurance to get my renewal sticker every year, but turning in plates? Nope. I own them.

plate becomes invalid once insurance is dropped. When you go to register it again in spring you just pay the fee. With the other way you have to buy another plate and those are money for another plate, especially a vanity plate
Geico is the only company ive dealth that done this and to not insure a vehicle cause its been lowered or lifted [modified] gives another reason to leave them
