Thread: Dyno Readings

  1. #21
I love it! Just ran a car I have owned for years but finally shook some bugs out of it and wanted to check my tune on an instrument instead of the road (more responsible and more accurate). Ran on a dyno jet (didn't know it was an inertia until after the fact) and put down 339hp/369ft lbs on the best run of 5 and of course was still disappointed. Took another project of mine to another guy who has a Mustang Eddy Current Dyno and the first thing he said was my numbers will be "significantly" lower on his, but...they are more realistic AND we can actually load test in a ton of different configurations, 1/8th mile, 1/4th mile, up hill, down hill, towing, even oval track. I laughed because the second thing he said was "I bet your torque and HP curves intersected at 5250 rpm". Sure enough I went home and as if he was there when I did the first car they intersect at exactly 5250. Part of their magic formula

He convinced me that I should bring down the original car and not only was the new reading SIGNIFICANTLY lower, we were able to find another 10 hp and 15 ft lbs only 4 days later. I have to look to be sure but I think it was something like 68 hp difference!

I always warn ppl before we dyno their vehicles that my Superflow is on the low side as well.
I hear your story quite a bit, or similar to that.
Time and time again, 300hp trucks are beating 400hp trucks lol.

Hell yeah, that's why we always say that the track times are what matters!

Also love it when they have 147 more hp than you, but you can easily put 3 or 4 truck lengths on them in no time on the street.

the most important sentence i picked out of it was this:
Again, if the dyno was used to provide a baseline and then evaluate how
a change to the vehicle impacted that baseline, it worked great!
that is the exact purpose of a dyno. who gives a damn about the numbers as long as you can see the results of your changes. track times is what it all boils down to. i will take a 300hp 13 second truck before a 400 hp 14 second truck.
