Nope. Do it. Get a tune and your tuner can shut off the code while he's at it. Go nelson performance for a nice mail order tune, you need one for the headers anyway.

when i got blackbear to tune my 01 engine, he uses the 02 PCM/OS which already don't use EGR. there was no issue whatsoever. when i put my headers on, i just pulled the whole system out & got an expandable freeze plug to stop the hole in the intake
I was curious about the EGR delete too. Will it hurt performance or MPG if you dont have a tune?
The only problem with not having a tune to keep the light off is that if there is something else that were to throw a code you would never know. Thats putting yourself at risk IMO.
