If your looking for maximum torque, why not go with long tubes?
As for the x-pipe, have you thought about a dual in/dual out muffler? i have one on mine wth 2.25" pipes and the banks are very evenly balanced. Its a Super 40 flowmaster.

I have not found any longtubes made for a 4.3L V6. If you know of any, please, please let me know!
Currently have not purchased any of these parts yet, but I'm looking at getting two single in/single out Mangaflows. Flowmaster mufflers sound terrible on the 4.3L, buddy of mine with Magnaflows sounds pretty good, on the other hand.
