If it is not centered it will be grinding on the crank, send metal shaving through oil system, and eventualy fail....

Ive never used feeler gauges or any sort of measuring equipment. Ive just simply eye balled it centered on the crank and tightened it down. The motor in my truck right now is the double digits of how many oil pumps Ive messed with and this one has about 2K on it so far and idles at 60psi on 5w20, maybe Im just lucky...

seriously, there isn't much adjustment on the oil pump to play with considering you are at the limitations of the gap between the bolt holes in the pump and the bolt pattern on the block. If one or the other is not correct you can put the pump in a bind. Probably 98% of the time the dimensions are proper and everything falls in place but the first time you pull apart a galled up pump and see where it rubbed on the pump housing you kick yourself for not checking it.
